Overview
Overview: Kanasar Lake Trek
Kanasar Lake Trek is one of the most scenic and untouched treks situated near the Himachal–Uttarakhand border, at a stunning altitude of 4,600 meters. Starting from the well-known Sankri base camp—gateway to over 25 treks in the region—this trail leads deep into the remote heart of Western Garhwal, nestled between the Supin and Nalgan valleys.
Part of the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttarkashi district, the route offers a rare blend of adventure, natural beauty, and spiritual calm. The Himalayas here are a canvas of towering peaks, alpine meadows, and snow-covered terrain—offering a retreat into nature’s purest form.
A Hidden Gem in Garhwal
The Kanasar Lake area remains largely unexplored due to its remoteness and challenging terrain. For many years, it was only known to local shepherds who discovered the trail leading to this magical, frozen lake. Even in June, the lake is often capped with a thin sheet of ice, enhancing its mystical appeal.
This one-kilometer-long lake is named “Kanasar” due to its resemblance to spots in a blind person’s eye. Its divine surroundings and surreal landscapes make it a true hidden gem for experienced trekkers seeking solitude and raw natural beauty.
Cultural Connection
Every year, local villagers visit Kanasar Lake during a traditional festival, adding a cultural dimension to the trek. Being part of the celebration offers trekkers a chance to witness authentic Garhwali customs and connect with ancient stories and legends passed down through generations.
